Spring Festival—China’s Celebration of Reunion

The Spring Festival, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the central family reunion holiday for Chinese people, much like Christmas in the West. During this festive period, people engage in a series of vibrant traditional activities:

• Posting Spring Festival couplets and “Fu” characters: Red couplets and upside-down “Fu” characters are displayed on doorways, symbolizing the arrival of good fortune and blessings.

• New Year’s Eve dinner: Families share a lavish feast, with dumplings (symbolizing wealth) a must in the north and rice cakes (representing step-by-step advancement) common in the south

• Giving red envelopes: Elders present money in red envelopes to younger relatives as a blessing

• Staying up all night and setting off firecrackers: Families gather through the night; modern electronic firecrackers often replace traditional ones

• New Year Visits: Starting on the first day of the lunar new year, families visit relatives and friends, exchanging auspicious gifts like tangerines.

The festive season culminates at the Lantern Festival, where people celebrate the new year’s completion by viewing lantern displays and solving riddles.
